Coiled Raffia Basket Workshop: Weave with Natural Fibers by Aron Fischer
Spend an afternoon learning the art of coiled basketry — one of the oldest and most versatile weaving techniques — using beautiful, natural raffia. In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the meditative process of coiling and stitching to create a small basket that’s both functional and sculptural. You’ll discover how simple materials and repetitive gestures can lead to a form that feels timeless, organic, and entirely your own.
With guidance throughout, you’ll learn how to start your coil, build structure and shape, and experiment with color through wrapping and stitching techniques. We’ll talk about fiber preparation, tension, and design decisions that influence the final form — from tight, structured shapes to looser, more fluid ones. Each participant will leave with a finished or nearly finished basket, along with the skills and confidence to continue weaving at home.
All materials are provided, and no experience is necessary. This workshop is a wonderful opportunity to slow down, work with your hands, and connect with the tactile beauty of natural materials. Whether you’re drawn to traditional craft, contemporary design, or simply looking for a relaxing creative outlet, coiled basketry offers a satisfying and grounding experience.
