Botanical Cyanotypes: A Sun-Printed Exploration of Nature & Light
by Jennifer Froula Weber
An immersive hands-on workshop in the art of botanical cyanotype on watercolor paper
Step into the quiet alchemy of light and shadow in this contemplative workshop, where art and nature converge. Together, we’ll explore the historical photographic process of cyanotype—a 19th-century printing technique known for its deep Prussian blues and ethereal silhouettes.
Guided by the sun, Jennifer will assist participants in composing and creating their own cyanotypes using carefully selected botanical specimens—ferns, wildflowers, grasses, and pressed leaves—arranged on richly textured watercolor paper pre-coated with a light-sensitive solution. As sunlight exposes the composition, a ghostly image is revealed, capturing both the delicate structure and quiet poetry of the natural world.
Throughout the session, we’ll delve into:
-
The science and history behind the cyanotype process
-
Techniques for preparing and coating watercolor paper
-
Best practices for botanical arrangement and exposure
-
Toning, rinsing, and finishing methods to enhance and preserve your prints
Whether you're a seasoned artist or a curious beginner, this workshop invites you to slow down, observe with intention, and let nature speak through pigment and paper.
You’ll leave with a collection of original cyanotype prints, a deeper appreciation for alternative photography, and the knowledge to continue the practice at home.
